Ann Marie Varghese

Age: 18
Height: 5’7″
Date of Birth: Dec 19
Zodiac Sign: Sagittarius

I really enjoy spending time outdoors. When the weather permits I like hiking and going the beach. Dance is one my passions as well. I used to take hip hop lessons when I was younger and then realized I loved Bollywood and classical Indian dance as well. Cooking is more of an interest than a hobby as of right now but it is definitely something I have been working on and am willing to pursue in the future.

Favorite color:

My Favorite color is Red.

What are you doing presently?

I am currently in college and working towards getting into medical school.

Future Plans:

In the future I definitely want to have established a career in the medical field. The fashion industry is something I’ve always had interest in as well so having my own designer scrub line would be something I would try to make a reality as well. I also definitely want to continue to pursue my hobbies in dance and cooking as well.

Why you entered The Miss India-DC Pageant?

Growing up in the United States, it is very easy for any culture to be “whitewashed”. I feel like participating in this pageant would allow me to show young Indian girls how truly amazing their culture is and that they should embrace it as much as they possibly can. I also feel it would be a way for me to get in touch with my own culture in a more intimate way.

Talent you plan to do for pageant

I plan on doing a dance melody. The dance would start off with a classic old Bollywood song, from the 50’s. It would end with a very recent and popular Bollywood song.

What 3 words sum you up?

What is an interesting fact about you that not many know?

Something people might not know about me is that I have a five-year-old sister, named Grace, who is like my shadow. As a result of our significant age difference I call her my sister child. We love having Bollywood dance parties together; I think it’s safe to say she is my “mini dancing jodi.” She goes everywhere with me and for those who don’t know us, I probably seem her mom. Another special thing we share is what Grace likes to call our secret handshake of love. We always make sure to keep our handshake as secret as possible so please don’t ask for a viewing.

If you were a super hero, what would your super power be?

If I had a super power it would be the power to clone myself. This would enable me to do multiple things at once. Many people struggle with the issue of not being able to do everything they want to in life. I would be able to help so many more people and accomplish so much more than I would otherwise.

If you could take three things to a deserted island what would they be and why?

If I was stranded on a deserted island these are the things I would bring with me and why. I would take a notepad and a pen to write down all the things I learn about the island because I would definitely be doing a ton of adventuring. I would also bring a machete in order to kill for food and get through any tough vines and things like that. The machete would also serve as my defense mechanism. Finally I would bring a box of flares with me in order to get the attention of any helicopters, planes or boats that might pass by.

Most embarrassing moment:

I have had multiple embarrassing moments in the past, but if I had to pick one it would be when I was about 8. My family was grocery shopping together, and I had this habit of standing on the end of the shopping cart while my parents would push. One day, I got onto a cart but when I looked up, a sweet older couple who looked nothing like my parents were smiling at me. I was absolutely mortified because I could not find my parents and they had to apologize for my stupidity.

Biggest inspiration:

My biggest inspirations are my grandparents. They sacrificed so much in their lives coming to this country and allowed me to have many opportunities such as participating in this pageant.

Worst nightmare:

My worst nightmare would honestly be not accomplishing the goals I have set for myself. I’ve been working very hard towards these goals and not accomplishing them would be devastating to me.

If you knew today was your last day on Earth, how would you spend it?

If it was my last day on Earth, I would spend it reflecting on the happy memories that have happened in my life over a burger and fries. I would also make sure to spend as mush time as I possibly could with my family. I’d tell them each how they’ve impacted me and how much I love them.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten:

“Do your best and God will do the rest.” -Mom

Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?

In ten years I hope to have my career well established. I would also hope to be married with a child or two. Another thing I would like to do within the next 10 years would be to buy my grandparents a quaint home back in the motherland so they can live comfortably and not have to endure the harsh winters in the DC area.
