Full Name: Karishma Setia
Zodiac Sign: Aries
Favorite Color: Maroon
My interest and hobbies include music, volunteering, and writing. I am in the school marching band and I have played the clarinet for over 7 years! I hate silence, and music is a beautiful way to fill a room. I also love spending a lot of my time volunteering at the Smithsonian Natural History Museum, where I encourage I facilitate tour groups and informative sessions. I also volunteer at Sentara medical hospital and assist patients and nurses. I adore meeting and helping new people and that’s why I have such a keen interest in volunteer work. One of my other hobbies is writing both poetry and prose. I have an admiration for works of literature and I enjoy being able to craft my own.
What are you doing presently?
I am a rising senior at Lake Braddock High School.
What are your future plans?
Once I graduate I plan on going to medical school and becoming an cardiac surgeon. I have always had an interest in medicine and I would love to be able to help people while doing something that I enjoy.
Why do you want to participate in the pageant?
Ever since I was little it has been my dream to participate in a pageant. I was always shocked by how dedicated pageant contestants often were, and that partly inspired me to be who I am today. I want to inspire other younger girls in the same way. I want to spread the message that if you really do believe in yourself there isn’t anything in the world you can’t do. I never really imagined myself having the courage to enter a real pageant but I’m learning to try new things and take risks. I want to encourage everyone to reach out and explore new things no matter how intimidating it may seem at first.
Talent you plan to do for pageant (Please include song name if doing a dance, this can be changed later):
I will be performing a dance to Kajra Re.
What 3 words sum you up?
What is an interesting fact about you that not many know?
Not many people know that I have a profound interest in the classical civilization of Ancient Rome. I am one of the few kids who has been enrolled in Latin classes for four consecutive years. I can recite all the kings and consuls of Rome in chronological order as well as give a historical synopsis. It’s a weird interest that a lot of people don’t really care about, but I think it’s one of the most interesting early civilizations to exist.
If you were a super hero, what would your super power be?
My superpower would be to control the weather. I am very passionate about environmental advocacy and I would love to be able to fix all the problems that are arising due to weather and the climate. I would be able to get rid of drought and help steady the rising temperatures on Earth.
If you could take three things to a deserted island what would they be and why?
If I was stuck on a desert island I would take my journal, a camera, and my dog. I would definitely need a journal and camera with me to write down and capture all the thoughts and experiences I would have on the island. I would also take my dog named Honey, as she would keep me company and cheer me up. She can make even the worst days better and I swear that she could make even a desert island a happy place!
Most embarrassing moment:
My most embarrassing moment was that when I was driving to school for the first time I hit a curb and popped my tire! I had to pullover and get my dad to change it while my mom came and drove me and my brother to school. It made the morning so much worse and by the time I got to school everyone knew about it!
My biggest inspiration would be my mom. I have seen her handling a million tasks and do all of them very well. She balances a job, the house, and two kids and I honestly have never looked up to anyone more. She never shies away from a challenge and always puts in 110% in every task she takes up. I constantly work towards being as astonishing of a person as she is.
My worst nightmare is being alone especially in a dark or unknown area. I loathe silence and quiet places! It gives me the most unsettling feeling and being in the dark would make it a million times worse. I constantly need noise and people in order to feel relaxed and comfortable.
If you knew today was your last day on Earth, how would you spend it?
If today was my last day I would spend all my time with my family. I would spend my time making sure that the people I really care about know that I appreciate them. There have been a lot of people who have come and gone throughout life, but my family has always been by my side. They have continuously inspired and motivated me to make an impact on the world, and I can never thank them enough for all their support.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten:
The best piece of advice I have ever gotten is that the journey is the most important part and not the destination itself. This advice has probably gotten me through some of the toughest times in my life. It reminds me that no matter what the outcome of certain events may be, I should focus on what I learned and how I grew from it.
Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?
I hope to see myself in a cleaner, greener Earth. Judging by the current pollution trend the environment is degrading at an exponential rate and I hope that within the next ten years we mend our ways. I hope to be living on an Earth where we don’t have to fret about basic biological necessities like clean air and water! In ten years I hope to be making a difference in the lives of others and making a positive mark on this Earth.
