Madhu Malavalli Umashankar
Date of Birth: Mar 02
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Music is my life! I have been singing since I was 8 years old. I’m a recording artist and performer. I just opened for Flo Rida & David Correy (from X-Factor) for Flo Rida’s GDFR Tour this past July at Echo stage in DC. I’m almost done with my 14 song album , and am in the process of releasing my first music video to my single “Everything U Need”. I not only take private training in music composition but also in the Italian “Belcanto Method” of vocal training with various professors at my college, George Mason University. I am mainly a Pop artist, but I have trained in opera, musical theater, and Hindustani Classical. I have competed twice on the Miss Virginia Stage and hold two titles from the Miss America Organization – Miss Piedmont Region’s Outstanding Teen 2014 & Miss Capitol Region 2015. Apart from music & pageantry, I love basketball and boxing. I have been playing basketball for 7 years now and was offered a scholarship to play basketball for the University of Mary Washington, even though I turned it down to focus on my Communications major with a public relations focus at GMU, where I am in the Honors College. I have also trained in boxing for almost 2 years alongside one of my celebrity fitness trainers Carlos Hernandez.
My Favorite color is pink.
What are you doing presently?
Currently, I’m a full-time student as well as full-time singer. It’s almost like I’m living Hannah Montana’s life – school student by day, pop star by night! A typical day for me consists of attending my communications, public relations, honors, spanish, radio, and music technology classes during the day and then traveling to either the DC or Maryland area to shoot scenes for my music video, rehearse dance choreography with my choreographer for when I start performing in the summer, or record more music at the recording studio!
My dream is to become the next Shakira. My future plans consist of me continuing to work with my publicist, build a strong entertainment management team, promote myself and perform incessantly, and to network because your “network” is your “net worth” in the music industry! I want to achieve all of these goals all while graduating GMU with a BA in Communications as well as a BA in Music. Once I have lived my dream and choose to settle down in the future, I want to be an entertainment manager, which is why I highly value my degree in music and well as communications with a focus in public relations.
Why you entered The Miss India-DC Pageant?
The miss India DC Pageant is a wonderful opportunity to be a connection from India to America not only as a role model, but as an aspiring musician, and as a capable and determined communicator. It gives me a chance to represent my culture as well as my country with pride and endearment. It gives me, as well as all the fabulous girls competing, a chance to be ourselves, to show the world what we’ve got, and to share the blessings God has given to us.
Talent you plan to do for pageant
I will be singing “Listen” by Beyonce. This song is about a girl who just wants to be heard and wants to be given a chance to express herself.
What 3 words sum you up?
Loving – I was sent to a private Christian school from 3rd-6th grade. Learning about Christ at such a young age built my morals up as a human being to love endlessly, forgive endlessly, and to always give.
Passionate – I have a very fiery passion for singing. It make some who I am. I love it with everything in me because everything in me is made up of music.
Invincible – My whole life, people have put me down and told me i was “too ugly” or “too fat” to EVER be a successful singer. When I was in the first grade, older boys would punch me in the face, kick me, call me names, and put me down about my passion for music. I forgave people like them, turned their hate into strength, and built my way up to where I am today.
What is an interesting fact about you that not many know?
I recorded my first EP album (EP Album- A small album of less than 5 songs) when I was 13 years old. My EP album was inspired by artists from all over the world like Daddy Yankee from Puerto Rico, Lea Castel and L’Algerino from France, and Miley Cyrus as well!
If you were a super hero, what would your super power be?
If I were a superhero, my super power would be to spread love with the touch of my hand. I want to combat hurt, pain, hate, prejudice, racism, and terrorism. Because hate is what is destroying our world, love is the only thing that can save our world.
If you could take three things to a deserted island what would they be and why?
If I could take 3 things with me to a desert island, I would take a map of the island, my best friend, and a camera! I would take a map so I could navigate the way around the island. I’d take my best friend so we could have an unforgettable BLAST! And I’d take a camera to capture pictures of my time there so I could share my trip with the rest of the world.
Most embarrassing moment:
When I was 6 years old, I had just finished ice-skating practice with my coach, and as I was walking out with my mom to leave, I saw there was a TV crew filming people climbing a huge rock climbing wall set up outside the ice-skating rink. I REALLY wanted to do it! I stood in line waiting my turn, and then finally my turn came! A man put rock climbing gear on means then told me to start as soon as I was ready. I went all the way up and felt like a champion UNTIL i came all the way back down. That was when “it” happened. As the man took of my gear, my biggest fear came true. I realized my mom WAS right – my pants looked a little loose on me that morning but my stubborn little self wanted to wear them because they were sparkly. As the man took of my gear, my pants came down with it and I was pantless on national TV.
My parents are my biggest inspiration. Both my parents lost their fathers at a very young age, causing them to grow up very quickly and take care of their entire families with no help. My father was the oldest of 8 brothers and sisters and my mother the oldest of 4. My father’s family had little to nothing growing up – no food, no real house, and not very many opportunities. My father was the greatest leader I’ve ever known. He took initiative and pursued his education. He walked miles every morning as a child just to go to school and worked endlessly just to be able to provide for his family. My parents taught me that no matter what the circumstances, anything is possible if you believe hard enough. Whenever I feel like giving up, my parents are the reason I don’t.
If I remember correctly, My worst nightmare was when I was running away from Jason, the killer, from Friday The 13th!
If you knew today was your last day on Earth, how would you spend it?
I would spend the entire day with my family and friends at my humble abode of a home, just talking about how amazing our lives were and laughing at old memories that I would soon take with me. The people who have supported me, loved me, and cared for me are the people I want to spend my last moments with.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten:
Out of all the words of inspiration and wisdom I’ve ever heard, the BEST piece of advice I’ve ever gotten is “Surround yourself with people who want to see you win”.
Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?
I hope to see myself very successful as a well renowned musician as well as a communications and music graduate. I hope to have a fantastic husband by then and my first child. I see myself living in the gorgeous city of L.A. or the beautiful suburbs of Tampa, Florida.
