Priyanka Bitra

Age: 17
Height: 5’ 2”
Interests/Hobbies:

I have a wide range of interests. The one thing people know me for is being a part of my school yearbook. I love designing spreads, taking photos, doing interviews, and teach my peer the diverse skills needed to be a well-rounded photojournalist. I also am a part of my school’s art and literary magazine. My friends and I started a Bollywood dance team during our sophomore year, which is my favorite part of school. I don’t take any dance classes so this club was a way for me to be able to perform and showcase the Indian side of myself to my community. I also campaign for Choung Nguyen, the candidate running to represent the 87th district in the Virginia House of Delegates.

Favorite color:

Red

What are you doing presently?

Currently, I am looking forward to my senior year.

Future Plans:

My future plans are to go to college, get a degree, and then get a stable job.

Why you entered The Miss India-DC Pageant?

I want to participate in this pageant so I can be a role model to other girls. I think this pageant can help me grow further as an individual so then I can use that to inspire others. Being a girl is something truly special and I want to embrace that and help others do so as well. I think it’s important to be confident and accept yourself as you are. This pageant is a way to look past flaws and see myself as perfectly imperfect and help others see themselves that way too.

What 3 words sum you up?

Caring – I dread seeing people around me hurt, or in a bad situation so I would do anything in my power to help them.

Leader – I have been the design editor for my school art and literary magazine for two years. I also have been given the position of editor-in-chief for my school yearbook for two years, even though it’s usually a senior position. I can put any bias ideas aside and think of what is best for the team, which is what a real leader must do.

Strong – I never give up in bad situations or let negative comments or drama get to me.

What is an interesting fact about you that not many know?

An interesting fact about me is that I have a blog. I made a Tumblr account because I wanted somewhere to put photos I take outside of yearbook. Only two of my friends know I have an account and I haven’t had it for too long. I made it for myself rather than wanting followers but it’s really cool when stranger like the stuff I post.

If you were a super hero, what would your super power be?

If I was a super hero, my power would be to time travel. If I could time travel, I would go to the future and learn about knew medicines that are discovered and then return to the past with this information so I could help save lives. I would also go to the past and try stopping terrible events like 9/11 and the Hotel Taj bombing.

If you could take three things to a deserted island what would they be and why?

If I could take three things to a deserted island, I would take a boat so I could get off it, food so I wouldn’t die, and fresh drinking water because I wouldn’t survive without it. I’m very practical so I think these three things are the most important things to take with me.

Most embarrassing moment:

The most embarrassing moment I can think of is this time in middle school when I rode the bus. It was a different bus that day, so it was crowded and didn’t have seats in front of the emergency exit like my usual one did. Someone sat next to my friend so she didn’t save me a seat and I was giving her a sad puppy face and wasn’t paying attention and sat where there was no seat. I fell on my butt and my violin case fell on top of me. I pushed it off me and looked at my friends and said “This is what happens when you don’t save me a seat.” We burst out laughing after which made me a little less embarrassed.

Biggest inspiration:

My biggest inspiration is my mom. My family moved to America when I was two years old. My mom didn’t have the opportunity to pursue a higher education after public school in India. After moving here, she didn’t get a chance to learn fluent English or get a driver’s license here. I think she puts herself down for that a lot but despite those struggles, there is never a day that she disappoints me. The way she takes care of me and can be so caring is something I can never pay her back for. She has taught me right from wrong, how to cook, how to take care of myself. Even before I started school, I remember her spending every afternoon teaching me all the math she knew because she wanted me to get ahead in life. The things she offers my sisters and me are so big, but in her eyes she still keeps wishing there was more she can give us. She never asks for anything and does everything so selflessly for me and the rest of my family. That selflessness is what makes her my role model, and inspires me to follow her in character.

Worst nightmare:

My worst nightmare was when I dreamed my sister was buying ice-cream from an ice-cream and then she got kidnapped by the ice-cream man. If that actually happened, I would be so devastated because we are super close and do so many things together. I couldn’t imagine her not being in my life.

If you knew today was your last day on Earth, how would you spend it?

If it was my last day on Earth, I would spend it with the people I love. I think people give so much value to materialistic things like nice cars, huge houses, and expensive jewelry but those things are so unimportant. If I were to live my last day, I want to die knowing I did right by everyone in my life and they knew how important they are to me. After I am dead, no one will remember how rich or pretty I was. They will remember how rich in character I was and the kind things I did during my lifetime.

Best piece of advice you’ve ever gotten:

The best piece of advice I have gotten is to be myself. I know that sounds cliche but it such a good thing to live by. Nobody can be better at being me than me. I don’t think I would want to be anybody else. If everyone was “perfect” we would all be the same and it would be boring because there would be no diversity. We wouldn’t be able to learn new things from each other if we were all perfect and the same.

Where do you hope to see yourself in 10 years?

In 10 years, I will be 27 years old. By then I want to have a job that I love and look forward to everyday. I hope to be married and have started a family and be a great mother. I also hope to still be doing photography and art because I don’t ever want to let go of the things I am passionate about.
